We came to visit when they had a world war 1 exhibition and it was free entry (donations only) Had the opportunity to wear a medieval knight outfit and learn more of their fighting equipment. Enjoyable experience. The tower offers you views of the city too. Very helpful friendly staff. Recommended

Good. The volunteers are really lovely and informative. It appears to be free all of the time (don't even have to show your EH card). It's a fairly small attraction and gets busy. Check the English Heritage website for opening times as it doesn't always appear to be open during the week.

The castle entrance is tucked away in the corner of a car park, so not so easy to spot if the arrive from the direction of the town. We were so lucky to be there on a re- enactment day which was excellent. The castle displays are very informative as were the enthusiastic guides. We are members of English Heritage

Castle just open on weekends in March. We went on a Monday. Great cafe in big car park at foot of castle. We walked the walls. Been before but was still a lovely walk.

It's not open often, but the reenactment weekends are great fun and really bring the castle alive with a mixture of costumed volunteers, musicians, EH interpreters and activities. At the Medieval Deva weekend, the focus was on the 15th and 13th centuries of English history. Earlier reenactors filled the courtyard and Agricola Tower with crafts, militaria and a Barber Surgeon while down on the green, the Savile family, Wars of the Roses reenactors, entertained with dancing, archery and living history with the tale of Saint George and the Dragon thrown in for good measure. A great, free day for anyone who was passing.

There is not a lot to see at this site. The chapel is worn, and the images that were painted on the walls have worn away. The volunteers are very helpful and knowledgeable. It is free to enter, with donations requested. I don't think I would pay to visit this site. Although I did donate.
