We arrived at opening time and were impressed that we got straight in. Kids up to 17 are free, and because I'm also a carer to my youngest, and had proof of this, I got in for free too, so it only cost PS17 for the 4 of us and the admission lasts for a year so you can visit again. The cathedral is absolutely stunning to walk around, and there are plenty of friendly staff/volunteers who have a wealth of knowledge about the history of the cathedral. The grounds are open to the public, so you can just have a wander around the outside to see how impressive the building is. We really enjoyed our visit.
It is magnificent as it can be! We came for a visit on a Sunday afternoon which is the day before the school started! Canterbury is a beautiful town, this cathedral added another level of beauty to this already beautiful place!
First visit 07/18/24 took a bus tour up to Leeds castle, Dover (British War Museum), and Canterbury. Our tour guide, Tom was very nice and the tour overall was enjoyable. However, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND bringing some sort of snacks with you to munch on on the bus. As lunch is not planned or provided. In my opinion, we weren't given enough time in Canterbury. You have to walk through the city to get to the cathedral, which takes up time. You get a quick, maybe ten minutes info session before you are sent out on your own to explore. By the time we got finished looking at the cathedral. We didn't have time for lunch...so we were out from 9am-6:30pm (two hour drive each way) we were starving by the time we got done..There are little cafes at Leeds castle and the War Museum (but if you really want to SEE everything you don't have time to sit and eat). You're also not allowed to bring any hot food (smells), hot drinks (can spill and burn you), or ice cream (sticky melting, messy) on the bus. My mom and sister tried to get some fast McDonald's at Canterbury only to have to leave it behind without even getting it because it took too long and they had to run to the bus, and couldn't take it on the bus. So they wasted money..
No need of booking in advance, well, it's pretty awkward that you need to buy a ticket for going inside the church (17PS per person). This awkwardness is it's an annual ticket but at the same time you may not be going there during the same year, also the map was of 3-4pounds. Apart from that, the cathedral had a splendid view. The architecture is stunning. The glass paintings gets highlighted as the sun rays hits them. The crypt underneath was something new for me and even could find the area was used as a praying section.. Everything had a detailed explanation everywhere. It's also possible to buy gift items like, rosary, glasses, pen, magnets etc. There's a public toilet service outside the cathedral, still inside the premises suitably for the disabled as well. Food and refreshments are also available. There's a beautiful garden in the premises, which itself is another attraction..
This is a must seen place in Canterbury. Recommending buying guide book and walk along with it. It is very easy and simple for everyone although you are not catholic, but you will understand the history of the cathedral well. High recommended for everyone to visit the place. It is really worth for annual pass ticket.
The history and architecture were amazing. They have guides all over the property that will happily answer question and walk with you to show you things. The crypts in the basement are set aside for solitary contemplation or prayer if that is your thing.
