About
Chester Cathedral is many things to many people: a vibrant community of worship, an ancient abbey, an archaeological treasure, a cultural hub, a centre of musical excellent and a unique blend of medieval and modern history. We're free to enter and welcome thousands of visitors from all over the world. During August, we're proud to present Making Tracks IV and two installations from British artist Liz West; as in previous years, a charge for entry applies Monday to Saturday (we remain free to enter on Sundays). We look forward to welcoming you.

I was only planning to look round the Cathedral but arrived just before holy communion in Lady Chapel. A very special, serene experience. Very friendly (vicar?) leading. Beautiful architecture and stunning windows. For families there is a huge model railway set up within the main cathedral, where children can 'drive' a train. Old victorian letter box outside.
A beautiful cathedral with so much to see. It's not free during summer (PS4.50 per adult or PS5 gift aid). I think if you go on Sunday it's free though. There wasn't a free guide offered which would have been handy but there are interactive screens dotted around. Inside, the stained glass windows are spectacular. The cloisters are very atmospheric. We were there around 4.30 on Bank Holiday Monday and the cafe and gift shop were both closed despite the cathedral being open until 6pm. There was a model train exhibition going on - great for kids and grown ups alike! Even spotted Pete Waterman! We only spent roughly an hour here.
Enjoyed this visit as it is in great condition both inside and out. Amazing history to soak up with fantastic internal antiquities to admire. Choir was rehearsing which was impressive indeed .
A wonderful cathedral, really big and feels very welcoming. Please note that it is not free entry during August (apart from Sundays in August) - the entrance is either PS4.50 for adults without gift aid or PS5 with. Rest of the year it is free entry. Enjoy the beautiful organs which have already been playing for hundreds of years and currently there are various exhibitions / installations, with lights, outside in the garden patio, even a massive toy railway section
Indeed a great architecture, with rich Roman history. A pleasure to eyes. However, it says that the entry to cathedral is free, but they do ask you to donate minimum 5PS and you can't avoid that. Overall a nice experience and a great day out in Chester
Chester Cathedral is an incredible experience, and the best part is it's free! The architecture is absolutely stunning, with intricate details that leave you in awe. The serene atmosphere inside offers a peaceful retreat from the bustling city. The staff and volunteers are friendly and knowledgeable, enhancing the visit with interesting historical insights. Don't miss the beautiful gardens and the tower tour for panoramic views of Chester. A must-visit for anyone in the area! There is also a cafe on site with toilets.
