Description
Please note that all visits must be by pre-booked tour. Visit our website for more details on how to book. Glasgow Museums Resource Centre (GMRC) is the store for the museums' collections when they are not on display. It is a vast building with rooms full of fantastic objects, from animals to armour, fine art to fossils, and much, much more. The main collections stored here are Art and Paintings, Arms and Armour, Natural History, Technology and World Cultures. The 17 purpose-built and environmentally controlled storage 'pods' house around 1.4 million objects. In fact, only 2% of our collection is on display at any one time and the majority of the remaining objects are stored here.

It's one of the best tours i have been on. You must prebook a tour using email, but the tours are free, and there are many to choose from. I booked a general tour to see what the museum storage facility was like and believe me i was not disappointed.

I was astonished by the GMRC. Glasgow stores more than it exhibits. An artist friend of mine was keen to view Ken Currie paintings not on display at the People's Palace. We viewed them on a general tour. However, if we had booked far enough in advance, we were told we could view almost anything we wished to. But, as we booked on the day, we saw several unexpected exhibits Not on exhibition. Eg a zoo's worth of stuffed animals, armour, William Burrell's home's wall fittings, and much more. All in 1 hour. The guides were fab. An additional Glasgow museum could easily be founded exhibiting the items in store. A fine, splendid afternoon.

Had not heard of the tours of the GMRC until I stumbled across a link online so booked onto a tour. Had Grant as our guide who took us through a few rooms of paintings, fossils and taxidermy and he had a great knowledge of the different items he was showing us. We were asked at the start if there was anything in particular we wanted to see but as we didn't know what was on offer we were happy to be shown anything. So if you do have a specific interest in something, you'll be able to request that room . All in all, it was a very interesting afternoon, something different and I will book back up again to look at some other rooms.

The GMRC - Glasgow Museum Resource Centre is where 98% of the treasures that are shown in the main museums in and around Glasgow are held before they go on show. It's an amazing place, the guy taking the tour was such a cool and friendly dude too. I had a wonderful time there, it felt like a real privilege to get a behind the scenes tour of the place and see all the amazing treasures, especially the art, the guide pulled out a big rack with Titian's and Bottichelli' originals, mind blown! Not to mention the ancient Egyptian and Roman wonders. Being so close to such priceless wonders in such an unlikely and private setting was amazing. Obviously the security is unreal there but that's to be expected. I can't recommend a visit enough :);

Extremely poor. Drove all the way to be told that you need to book first. Waste of petrol. 2 staff doing nothing at the front and they couldn't explain why guests need to book in advance. Woman told me that it was clear how to book on their website - which is a lie. I will not be back.
