Follow in the footsteps of the miners who once worked at the Lewis Merthyr Colliery, right here in the heart of the Rhondda Valley - the 'Home of Coal.' Book a tour and go underground with our guides who are full of entertaining tales and fascinating facts. Our tours are suitable for all the family. Kids and adults alike love to put on a helmet and step into our lift where the adventure begins... The tour ends with DRAM! This exciting virtual ride is exclusive to A Welsh Coal Mining Experience.
Very interesting tour of top side and underground of a typical coal mine. Our guide John was very informative, and made the experience come alive with stories and a few jokes. The highlights of the tour for me when when John set off a mock explosion underground, as the miners would do whilst opening a new coal seam. The tour culminated in a simulated Dram Ride, which was fun. There is a very nice cafe at the exhibition, serving really good food, and also selling their own brand of chocolate, which I believe is made on site.
Don't forget to pre book. I really liked the tour and even though the guide was an actual miner from back in the day, I couldn't understand most of the things he said. But I still loved going underground, the route was worth it, seeing the massive engine run and it all ends in an AR train ride. You can't just visit the museum and don't go down. Recommended. 4* just because the guide was really really hard to understand. Sorry, but it really degraded my experience
We did the Black Gold Experience tour with Peter who was an ex-miner who had worked at this Colliery. It was very interesting and the stories of what life as a coal miner was like throughout history were jaw dropping. We learnt so much about this important part of Welsh (and British) history. The tour was very immersive and we all thought it was one of the best guided tours we had been on (including my son aged 13).
Fantastic and authentic, so good to for my kids 11&13 yrs to hear Graham's storey. A genuine Welsh collier who's worked in mines since he was 15yrs old... this is how history is kept alive, told from the real men who lived these hard lives down the mine.
Great tour through the coal mines and it's history in the welsh valleys. Make sure to book a tour with a miner - it's a great experience!
We booked a tour that included the workings of the coalmine and an underground walk through a mine. This was an extraordinary experience, very informative, never boring, superbly presented by our guide John. The museum also earns a worthy mention. The half-day was memorable and excellent value for money. We thoroughly recommend a visit, very easy to get to, with frequent trains from Cardiff Queen Street. Long may it survive as an educational part of British industrial history.
