This monument honors Admiral Samuel Hood, a British naval officer who played a crucial role in the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. Erected in 1794, the monument stands 33 feet tall and features a pedestal topped with a statue of Admiral Hood, dressed in his naval uniform, gazing out to sea. The pedestal is adorned with intricate carvings, including anchors, ropes, and other nautical symbols, while the base is inscribed with the admiral's achievements and a dedication to his memory.
Thought this would make a good walk from the car park, but unfortunately too many dog walkers use it as a toilet area as there is dog mess all around the car park paths. The walk to the monument was intersting, but the monument looks to be neglected and overgrown. Shame that so many dog owners are so irresponsible ruining it for the rest.
Magnificent monument that speaks to the power of the Admiral it memorialises. High enough that the hawks soar around it, but hidden behind the trees so that you need to know it is there to find it. The views are equally magnificent, on both sides, all the way Glastonbury Tor on the one, and across the Somerset Levels on the other. There is limited parking space on the road by the almost hidden entrance.
Lovely views and good history to monument. Shame about vandalism scratching names into stonework hence stone doorway to protect spiral staircase. Mindless really that some think this is a good thing to do when it is part of English history?
Haven't been for ages, still worth a visit if like me you love local history.
