Historic church featuring an 18th-century brick tower, marble ceiling & Victorian glass windows.
Fantastic display of Chagall's work. At 10:30am on a Sunday morning there was a small service ongoing which made us take our time to sit and observe/feel the atmosphere of this same sacred space which inspired the artist to transform this church. The East window above the altar is spectacular. The juxtaposition of such high art and simple surroundings only heightens the experience. Just go, preferably on a sunny day morning.
A small church in the Kent Weald that as well as being a place of worship, has the distinction of being the only church in the world that has all 12 of its windows decorated by the Belorussian-French, modernist artist, Marc Chagall. The church itself has been there since the 7th century but the current structure is 18th C. The church is down a short lane off the main road. There's a large, unpaved car park. Access to and within the church is disabled-friendly. The stained glass windows are quite amazing, brought to life even more vividly by the fact that you can get very close to them. As well as the stained glass windows, don't forget the marbled ceiling, the font, the organ, look down at the floor as you walk around and don't forget the original stained glass windows in the Vestry (press the button behind the curtain to illuminate). There's a card reader donation point to the left of the font in the north aisle. Toilets are open only during church services and if there's a pre-booked tour. Several benches in the grounds outside if you want to take in the tranquility. A beautiful place.
Beautiful chapel located in a wondeful peaceful place. Chagall's stained glass windows are magnificent. We are French and we delighted of this visit.
Beautiful location to display some extraordinary art in the stained glass. East window stunning and so poignant.
This is a fantastic story, the stain glass windows are superb. As we were in the area my partner took me to see the church, I really enjoyed the visit. Highly recommended.
A beautiful little church that is listed in the Domesday Book, and is definitely worth visiting. It is best to go on a sunny day to see the windows in all of their glory. It is the only church in the world that has all its windows in stained glass designed by the Russian-French artist Marc Chagall.
