Situated in the historic market town of Alton, the Allen Gallery is an intimate setting for one of the south's most outstanding collections of ceramics. The gallery hosts an impressive and varied selection of pottery, porcelain and tiles dating from 1250 to the present day. The front section of the gallery was originally a stable and coachman's house. William Hugh Curtis, the final owner of the building, left the premises in his will to be used as a public museum. On the ground floor of the gallery are the main exhibition areas, shop, cafe and toilets, and on the first floor you will find our children's activity area as well as more displays showcasing our excellent ceramics collection.
We visited specifically to see the Quirky Quilts exhibition but also gad a look around the other displays and the lovely garden. Park in Victoria Rd carpark, then it's a 2 minute walk. Entry to the Allen Gallery is free but you can leave a cash donation in a secure tub. Small coffee and biscuits area with seating or out in the garden
Good little gallery at the top of town. Long term display of pottery if you like that sort of thing. Gallery which has different shows on over the course of the year. Good outside space, well maintained garden. Self service cafe area with a couple of tables and coffee/tea machine, home made cakes and a few other bits and pieces. Very friendly staff. Good kids area upstairs too!
What a lovely and nicely curated exhibition, we enjoyed it very much during our visit in Alton! Don't miss to also go to the Curtis Museum, it was equally as nice.
Very good Icelandic themed craft exhibition on at the moment. Relaxing garden to sit out in.
Lovely staff. We did the Tuesday clay leaf making workshop during the summer holidays. Stacy was lovely and patient. There was a mini treasure trail around the mad hatters tea party theme. We can't wait to do it again whenever it's on next.
Lovely little gallery with a gorgeous garden. First visited during the Jane Bown exhibition and planned a revisit the following week to take another look. Sadly on the 2nd visit (Saturday lunchtime) we were clearly in the way as the staff wanted to photograph and close the exhibit :(
