100 male statues by Antony Gormley made from cast iron, stretching for 1.5 mi. along the estuary.
I'm not sure I understand the artwork but the beach is spectacular and the cast iron figures stand our impressively. Quite muddy on the beach at places but it was fascinating enough that we spent quite a bit of time there, walking from figure to figure, going further and further out!
Lovely beach. Quiet and pleasant. Not a lot of parking available. Not great toilet facilities. The seashore is about 20 mins from the beach. It is a bit mucky to the seas shore, our feet were covered in black slime pretty much. Google maps shows different areas of the beach. At the north end is the main entrance and main parking to the beach. The south entrance is private parking for the leisure centre, however this area of the beach is better than the north entrance.
Great beach with this sculpture of 100 statues. Breathtaking on a good day. Visiting is very easy with a large car park. (53.496091062048464, -3.0581922009735023) There are public toilets in the car park.
This is an unusual location for pubic art installation .. and the vastness and unglamorous aspect of this beach exemplified Antony Gormley's choice for the place. "The beach is the opposite of pretty. It is terrific and brutal, and it is a working beach" said the artist. At low tide, the beach can become muddy with sink holes. Be careful!
The figures are great, cover a vast area of beach. The estuary can be very muddy though so take plenty of towels for the dog No dog wash facilities. Some temporary toilets-not the best kept either. Park by the leisure centre, it's free (not in the leisure centre)!
Spectacular. Easy to get to from Crosby station, just cross the street from outside the station and go straight down, do not follow Google map if you travel on foot.
Wheelchair-accessible car park
Wheelchair-accessible entrance
Good for kids
