Ardchattan Priory is a 13th-century monastery located on the Isle of Bute, Scotland. The priory was founded by the Cluniac order and features a mix of Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles. The ruins include a nave, chancel, and transepts, with remaining walls reaching up to 20 feet high in some areas. The priory's stone walls are adorned with intricate carvings and ornate stonework, showcasing the skill of medieval craftsmen. Despite lying in ruins, the priory still exudes an air of tranquility and peacefulness, surrounded by rolling hills and scenic countryside.
A former Priory built by the MacDougals to bring themselves closer to heaven. Eventually given over to Clan Campbell. Also a working farm.
Wonderful ruins and gardens superb
This review is for the ruins out back. These small ruins can be accessed separately from the abbey gardens, and free to see during the day (not just Wednesday like the gardens). It has a few signs, walls, and grave markers - as well as picturesque views over the lock. For parking - there is an area along the loch in the marked stony area then walk the 90 meters down the tiny road to the ruins.
Priory ruins interesting. Garden of big house open on a Wednesday - cost 5 pounds sterling per person in honesty box. The garden is stunning & is maintained by one woman! Well worth a visit if you are into gardening.
Very serene. The ruins are joined on to a private residence and work was going on in the grounds. Its good to see that since it was built in 1230 that people are still active. Have a look for the Celtic Cross and the Skull and Bones!
Interesting ruins in an out of the way spot. Doesn't take long to see everything
Wheelchair-accessible car park
Good for kids
