Visit Scotland 5 Star attraction on the magical Isle of Skye. Magnificent gardens, romantic castle ruin and award-winning Museum of the Isles. Children's activities, events, gift shop and refreshments. Woodland walks around the gardens. 4 Star self-catering lodges to rent. The 'spiritual home' of Clan Donald, Armadale was previously the seat of the Macdonalds of Sleat and is now run by a charitable trust. Gardens and Museum open daily from 9.30am-5pm (last entry 4.30pm)
I was on a tour that led to this castle. The castle itself is just alright, but the scenery nearby was very nice. The museum was short but informative and interesting. My only complaint is that the prices of the tickets were steep compared to what you will receive in return.
What a wonderful park with local and exotic plants, the castle itself is merely a ruin and so is the former laundry, while the stables have been converted into a beautiful cafe. We enjoyed every minute of our stay and in particular the smell of the flowers and the views down to the strait.
The castle gardens and their view on the sea are lovely even when the weather is a lot less nice. The museum has a good structure of it's exhibition and is quite informative. However the amount of artifacts in display is limited. The castle ruins are relatively unspectecular. The entrance fee of 14 PS is quite high for what you get.
Wonderful museum, that explains in detail the history of the Highlands and of the Clan MacDonald. Highly recommended, also the cafeteria has great food. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and the free audioguide provides very interesting details on the museum. The castle ruins are unfortunately unaccessible, but the park is probably the best thing to visit (even more than the museum)
We were apprehensive about visiting the gardens, being in a 6m motorhome, with a disabled passenger using a mobility scooter. What did we find? Great disabled parking, even for us! Helpful staff who showed us the best routes to take. Easily accessible cafe (we did like the wraps!) and toilet. We got everywhere, apart from one set of steps which we did not need to use and saw everything. Lovely gardens, beautifully maintained and a simple (thank you) but informative museum which did not try to thrust too much information at us and was also scooter friendly. A lovely day out and worth the 80 mile round trip, thank you.
Armadale, the castle is a deliberate ruin which is being stabilised in order to allow visitors to wander. The museum is top quality, information about Scotland historically and this area and the McDonalds in particular. Excellent cafe with a range from snacks to meals and overall pleasant and helpful staff. Recommended.
