Just six miles south-west of Inveraray, Auchindrain Historic Township is a hidden gem that provides a unique and authentic window into Scotland's past. Centuries ago there were thousands of settlements like Auchindrain (known as townships) all over the country. Between the 18th and 19th centuries, landlords put in place agricultural improvements to make their lands more profitable. Known as the Highland Clearances, this process included the eviction of tenants, in many cases by force. With time townships fell into ruin and disrepair. Auchindrain survived the Clearances and today stands much as it did in the late 1700s. Now run by an independent Charity, the township is one of Scotland's most significant cultural sites.
A step back in time in this historically preserved township. Nice little coffee house within the reception area. All the information on the township is on a tablet handed to you before entering. This was the only down side as I found it fiddly and difficult to see in the bright sunlight. Other than that, a detailed and fascinating exploration into how a township worked, its occupants etc . Well worth a visit if you're in the area!
Loved this museum. Auchindrain is no ordinary museum it is infact a deserted settlement. It makes you feel very lucky at the lifestyle we have now. It's worth a look around. But work in progress for this project. There is a gift shop & cafe.
Knowing the stories of the people who lived there really brought this place alive. Very well restored with all the pots, toys & furniture etc. Some of the buildings when we were there were being renovated so will be back on our free return pass to hopefully see them finished. Took our bearded collie who made quite an authentic addition. Dogs welcome (on leads) in all areas which was great. Very much enjoyed the experience.
Really good, thoroughly enjoyed this place. When you first enter, you wonder whether it's worth the admission fee. But it really is.
Place full of history. We were given an interactive tablet to walk through the houses with history about each place. Interior of some houses was really well made with historical items.
This is a great place to visit. Very historical site. Some houses done out as they would of looked. Toilets, gift shop, coffee and snacks available. Staff lovely.
