Although the Bacup Natural History Society was formed in February 1878. It took several more years before the members found premises in which to open a public museum. This was accomplished with the renting of number 6 Yorkshire Street, Bacup where on the 10th May 1889 a public museum was opened in the upper front room. Bacup has a rich local, social and military history all of which are reflected in our collections, which are now housed in our present museum at 24 Yorkshire Street, Bacup. We believe we are one of the oldest independent museums in Lancashire and offer a warm welcome to visitors young and old alike.
A lovely friendly and informative museum with delightful and dedicated volunteers a pleasure to visit
An absolute gem! This is a must see if you're in Rossendale, never mind Bacup. An amazing tardis of a museum who's collections defy the apparent size of this former public house. Housing some amazing artefacts not just from around Lancashire but across the world, this is a stunning goldmine of history. Incredibly friendly volunteers who are not only very welcoming but offer some passionate insight into the history of the area, the people and the artefacts they care for. And it's free! This museum is a must see.
Nice local museum. Holds good events occasionally
I went to find some family history for a friend who wanted to find out about her grandad who was killed in an accident in the 1930s. The lady who helped me was amazing ... She showed me old news papers and trawled through historic records for me and found full and detailed information to pass to my friend, who now has enough info to visit her grandad's grave and have a look at where he used to live
The cocoon was closed which made me sad sad sad.
The go to place for everything you need to know on the history of Bacup and surrounding areas, Wendy found some interesting info on my family tree, it was an article in the Bacup Times about two of my great-uncles business mill, very helpful and friendly also lots of museum pieces to view
