I was at the iconic Southampton Bargate Monument, which was reportedly built about the year 1180, to keep out intruders. Southampton is really a city of monuments and have managed to maintain them as much as possible.
Found this random, most amazing medieval castle kinda hidden in Southampton, near the port. Constructed in Norman times as part of the Southampton town walls, it was the main gateway to the city. The statue was a gift to the town from John Petty, 2nd Marquess of Lansdowne and is made from Coade stone.
If you believe all the social media posts from visitors to Southampton, it is a Medieval walled city, with an amazing gate. That is what is was, hundreds of years ago. Now the Bargate is one of the only remaining party of the ancient city. . Most of the city now is an ugly modern shopping centre. Don't come to Southampton just to see old city walls, you will be disappointed.
We took a 90 mins tour starting here. Impressive to know the story of Southampton, the year the bargate was erected and its purpose. I truly enjoyed the history behind the monument and its importance on protecting the city.
Good connection between London and Southampton. Over one hours train or National express bus. Went there and stayed over the night. Nice city and good shopping center. Good night life, plenty of pubs and restaurant. Highly recommended to visit this city.
