The Barony Mill is Orkney's last remaining working watermill and has been operated by the Birsay Heritage Trust since 1997. Built in 1873, the Barony Mill is believed to be the only working watermill in the world to still commercially produce Beremeal. Bere is an ancient form of barley which is tolerant of the cool temperatures and short growing season of Orkney. The Barony Mill is open everyday 11am to 5pm. From May to September we are open to the public for free guided tours and admission. Beremeal is available for sale for home use and for commercial bakers. Bags of Beremeal can be bought in 750 g, 1.5 kg, 3 kg and 25 kg bags. More details can be found on our website.
Very interesting tour with explanations of workings and history as you explore different parts of the mill. Our son was very excited to get to activate the water wheel by releasing a large lever. Bought some oatcakes from the gift shop made from the floor ground here and they were great. Highly recommend a visit.
Amazing Mill that still processes Beremeal after 150 years. Great volunteer guide who shows entire process which is largely unchanged!
Fantastic tour of Orkney's last remaining watermill. Highly recommend visiting in order to take the tour, which lasts approx. 30 minutes. They have a small shop to purchase their products and a recipe book. One of the top highlights of our visit to Orkney!
Thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Barony Mill, the only watermill in the world dealing with bere. The young lady who showed us around was very knowledgable and a great tour guide. The mill is only open to visitors in the summer and viewings are by guided tour only (30 mins, PS5pp), so it's worth checking the website in advance for tour times, or even booking in advance. There's a good little gift shop with various products made from bere flour/husks.
