This ancient woodland is a tranquil oasis in the heart of the New Forest, featuring a mix of deciduous and evergreen trees, including oak, beech, and holly. The woodland floor is carpeted with bluebells, wild garlic, and ferns, and is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, ponies, and birds. The Inclosure is surrounded by a high fence, which helps to preserve the natural environment and protect the woodland from grazing animals. Walking trails crisscross the woodland, offering visitors a chance to explore the area and enjoy its peaceful atmosphere.
Great walk. Lots to see especially away from the main path.
Lovely wild location. Encounters with ponies pretty much guaranteed. It's quite a samey walk around the perimeter, local woodland more beautiful but worth a visit
If you follow the old airfield perimeter path, you will walk just under 5km. If you look to the south there is a hill trialing above the gorse bushes and even has its own gorse bushes. This is an artificial hill created during the war by digging a pond to the rear of it. This is affectionately known as 'The Hump' At first glance, it would appear insignificant but its history and the reason it was created was for the aircraft gunners to fire into to test their guns before take off. Quite and important hump really. If you add this to your walk, you will do over 6km, however it very flat, apart from the hump, and I would say it was a suitable walk for all ages. During April the gorse surrounding this area has an abundance of its yellow flowers which create quite a view when stood atop the hump.
Lovely walk, car park is full of pot holes so would suit a 4x4. Area also prone to flooding but as long as you wear walking type shoes you will be fine
