Journey through time on daily tours through awe-inspiring, 2000 year old, vaulted caves.
Stumbled across it while driving the thin lanes of Devon. Thought hey why not pop on in, we are in holiday from NZ let's see what it's all about. Jed the guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. It was surreal going into the place that has been going since the Romans rocked up to these shores. I found out halfway through that my great great great grandfather ( there maybe another great in there?) used to work there. When times were lean at Portland Quarry workers used to come there and do a 16hr work day to earn some coin. Our 16yr old daughter who isn't a history kinda gal was like... wow this is so cool. She was so interested in it.
We have been meaning to go here for a while and this year we made it, well worth the visit and tour around the quarry. A really interesting tour conducted by Martin, who took us around around and told us about its history and stories. Tour took about 1 hour and a half. Wrap up warm as it is cool whilst on the tour. Don't forget to call ahead and book on a tour.
This was one of the best tours I've ever been on. In the words of my 15yo "Shirley is a legend." The tour is fun and very informative with so much history. I loved the caves they had an eerie beauty to them. Both my son's want to go back for a ghost tour!
Incredible location steeped in history. Amazing tour with Martin, our super knowledgeable tour guide, made the experience so much better. Dog friendly throughout but a little rough in places so if you have an older dog, like us, they might need some help in parts. Definitely recommend booking ahead as our tour was quite busy and they only run every hour so you don't want to be stuck waiting for the next one
We had a lovely tour of the Beer Quarry Caves. Our guide Gill was very funny and knowledgeable. Interacting with the kids and adults on the tour on their level. The quarry is massive and it is very nice to see the history that is there. We went on a very hot day, so it was a welcome coolness in the cave. And not a lot of people around, we didn't book in advance. Although I would recommend proper clothes because for some it could be too cold. Anyone visiting the area, just book a visit to the Quarry it's worth it.
Travelled 40 miles from Weymouth whilst on holiday today and so glad I did. What a fabulous tour of the Quarry Caves this was. Our guide for the 90 minute experience was Steve and what a great job he did with giving a detailed history of the caves, showing the difference between the extraction techniques and stories from over 2000 years ago starting with the Romans up until the current day. I would highly recommend it this experience to all. Thanks to all the staff who made this a super morning out. There is a small cafe area, toilets, free parking and place to get yourself a fridge magnet. Tours run every hour from half past the hour but may be best to phone up the day before and book yourself a time. Make sure you wear some warm clothes as the temp does drop to around 8 degrees. There is small single track road leading off the main road to get to the car park in case you are a weary driver and want to let someone else drive.
