The significant remains of an 11th- to 13th-century motte and bailey castle, including earthworks.
View it as 2 activities. A nature walk around the outer bank, including a hero, ducks, coots and moorhens. A ruined castle run around including climbing the motte for a great view. A plus for train lovers!
Good old castle to explore and very large with information run by volunteers staff Free to enter. Close by train station and Canel River with lovely pubs along the way plus lovely walk round the castle moat
Didn't really know what to expect just had a look at places to visit on the English heritage app while visiting family. Was great for a short visit kids can really run about, not much here so don't expect more than a friendly person at the gate to greet you and some great scenery. Worth a visit if you are passing.
Lovely bit of history! Shame they plundered the stone in the 16th century but the gardens well kept and it's beautiful!
Great place! On weekdays it's nice and quite so you can enjoy it at your own leisure without having kids and dogs running around! There is some restoration planned to go ahead but still a great visit. The moat is filled currently so it's a great time to visit. The castle has easy access just across the road from the railway station. Free access just a option to donate on your way out which is recommended! So try preserve this great bit of history for as little as PS3.00!
Lovely afternoon out really interesting if u love history. Ideal for having a picnic and a stroll around and if u can manage it climb up the moat for a great view. Shame that there is loads of dog muck all over the place and people climbing on the walls ignoring plently of signs telling u to do otherwise.
Wheelchair-accessible entrance
Good for kids
