Allegedly haunted, ruined castle and Elizabethan mansion in a deep, wooded valley setting.
A great castle which takes about 1 hour to explore with some very steep steps not suitable for those wobbly on their feet. Free audio history is available which offers a historic perspective of the castle from various characters who would have been involved in day to day castle activities. PS11.50 entrance fee for an adult, without EH card. The Castle cafe (not English Heritage) offers a small selection of very generously filled sandwiches and toasties, as well as delicious cakes. Do note that the cafe stops serving sandwiches etc at 2.30.
A brilliant example of British history. Friendly, helpful and informative staff. I recommend that you get the audio guide as it will greatly enhance your experience. I would also recommend visiting in good weather, as it is most assuredly a ruin, with no cover. Excellent walks in the area as well.
Loved the short walk around the castle. The first slope going down from the car park was a bit muddy and slippery, but the rest was stunning! Free parking that's open till 5 with a circular route. I didn't actually go into the castle
Absolutely love it here, stopped for a coffee first then had a wander in the castle. It's so beautiful if you love a ruined building. Lots of history, stunning views. I've been a few times and will happily go back again.
We just happened upon Berry Pomeroy after being frustrated by the lack of parking in at another castle close by. Bonus that it is managed by English Heritage as we have visitors membership cards. The audio tour is delightful and really makes these ruins come alive. The staff and volunteers who man these historical sites are a vast resource of information and knowledge. There is also a fair amount of parking spaces available
Beautiful ruined castle. Impressive, romantic, a really good and different place to visit. I love it.
