This museum showcases the history of the gas industry in Scotland, with a collection of vintage gas meters, engines, and other equipment. The museum is housed in a restored 19th-century gasworks building, offering a unique glimpse into the industrial past. Visitors can explore the preserved gasworks, including the retort house, purifier house, and boiler house, and learn about the process of producing town gas. The museum also features exhibits on the social history of the industry, including the lives of gasworkers and their families.
Amazing staff and great industry site to visit.
The last working gasworks in Scotland, very knowledgeable staff, great wee experience :) Managed to get in when it was all up and running so that was a bonus. :)
There isn't that much to do and the 20 minute video seems a bit long but if you are very interested in gasworks then it's very informative
Visit on steam days as there are things going on including steam engines, with a boiler fired up and steam generated, hence steam days. Much of the original equipment is still in place and bits of it work on steam days.
Wonderful for all ages! Visited with my son and parents and we all had a great day. A fascinating collection of artefacts and appliances from years gone by including original machinery and life size reproductions. Staff were very friendly and knowledgeable and truly interested in the subject which led to great discussions. This was our second visit and we look forward to our third- yes, it's that good!
Do you really know how coal gas was made commercially? I certainly did not and now I do. It's only a small museum but it is fascinating. If you can go on a steam day. Seeing the machinery up and running and talking to the operators makes it a fantastic experience.
