George Tupper could have had no idea that the stone he struck whilst ploughing in 1811 would lead to the discovery of one of the largest villas in Roman History. Today it is still managed by the Tupper family under the control of the Charities Trustees who continue to strive to maintain the site for the education and enjoyment of all who visit.
I cannot review the Roman villa as we didn't go there. We went to the sunflowers on Saturday 10th August. We got there in the morning and the boy & girl at the welcome hut were so friendly and explained everything perfectly. The card machine did not work and we didn't have cash. After waiting quite a while they let us in and said we could pay when we left. The sunflowers were beautiful and loads of them. We didn't pick any even though we took the cutter things with us. When we left the card machine still didn't work. The girl was really apologetic. In the end we paid at the refreshment van. All sorted and no issue. A really nice day out. Cheap too 5PS per adult.
It was one of the first roman villas I've visited. Went there on Sunday, and it wasn't too busy. Very informative and educational. The scenery outside was beautiful. There is a lovely sitting area at the entrance and lots of banches and tables for having lunch in the open air. There was an entry fee of PS11 pp if I remember correctly. One can easily spend a couple of hours there, so it was well worth the money I would say.
Amazing little, privately owned museum. It's looking a bit tired in places but the quality of the mosaics and other finds more than makes up for it. Not easy to find, or reach, as it is way off the beaten track, down miles of fairly rough country lanes. However, it is well worth a visit.
Beautiful mosaics. Would recommend coming on a dry day as parking on a field. Mosaics in buildings but bath house outside. There is a little reasonably priced cafe.
Mosaics were lovely and nice to see Roman history. The cafe didn't look appealing, wrapped cakes just dont appeal. Small museum, you can do this in an hour or less. Not enough to see for PS11 each. Needs a huge injection of cash to get this place looking less tired.
Beautiful location and well laid out exhibition. Very informative. Wonderful that people take such a interest in the past and bring it alive for us to learn about and enjoy. Friendly staff. Basic loos and a simple cafe but everything you need. Camp site there with beautiful views and picnic areas. Visit especially if you are in interested in the the Romans and their ingenuity.
