A staircase of five locks on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, raising the water level by 59 feet over a distance of 320 yards, with each lock gate weighing over 20 tons and requiring manual operation by lock-keepers.
Nice area and an amazing bit of engineering. Quite hard to get a good photo of all 5 locks. Was surprised no boat tours through the lock. If you struggle with mobility, take a scooter as is steep and slippy.
A wonderful place for a gongoozla. I am not good with heights nor with water, so you would think this is not the place for me, but it is incredible. There is a cafe at the top and a water point for the boaters. At the top there is a swing bridge to be operated before you can access the rise. CRT were on hand to open the bridge and then help a boater through. The water really shoots out under some pressure as the photo hopefully shows. It was a pretty dull wintry day, but the experience is excellent. A little further down is the Bingley 3 staircase locks which we will visit on our next time.
Interesting place on the Leeds and Liverpool canal. The canal itself is great for walking/ running, but the locks also add an element of interest. Paths are great with plenty of space for all.
Fantastic. Will definitely visit again
Great experience, but do wear waterproofs when steering your boat down the locks. CRT staff great help.
Lovely walk along the canal and the locks are awesome. Shame they were closed for maintenance but impressive all the same. The dog friendly cafe was a bonus too. Not much parking near the locks but just up the road there is plenty of. Have a stroll into Bingley while you are there.
Wheelchair-accessible entrance
