Start your Hadrian's Wall adventure at Birdoswald Roman Fort in Cumbria. Here you can still see the remains of all of the Wall's defining features. Stand in awe as the longest remaining stretch of the Wall spans as far as your eye can see, and explore the ruins of the Roman fort, a turret and milecastle. Delve into the story of the most famous Roman frontier with a new exhibition in the visitor centre.
This is a nice place to have a hike or learn a bit about history. We had an hour long tour of the Birdoswald site and a small part of the wall itself, with the opportunity to extend the tour to walk more of the wall. The guide was very good at explaining everything and making it accesible to children as well. There's a museum on site too, which is very well taken care of and interesting for children. The cafe there offers nice teas, snacks, and lunch options, too.
Lovely space and a great set up. Friendly staff, nice exhibit area and cafe. Best bacon roll I have had in a very long time!! Interesting tour of the site and the digs that were going on too (sadly the digs were finishing today and were being recovered over) .. definitely a worthwhile visit to one of the attractions on the wall.
Fascinating place! Mostly just the bases of the fort remain but there's an interactive display for kids of what life was like back then and the views are stunning. Well worth a visit if you're interested in Roman history.
There's a good long section of the wall here, which you can walk along for free. The paid exhibition part is OK, but there's not much left of the fort to actually see. They had a good kids activity thing to make it a bit more interesting for little ones. Cafe served nice soup and coffee.
Really cute museum, great for kids. Public Access bathrooms which IS brilliant Gift shop IS Amazing even has recreation roman armour Cafe IS criminally expensive you simply cannot charge 7.50 for a sandwich comparable to that of tescos and a bottle of water
This is a place I have always wanted to visit and finally done it, plenty to see and do while you are there and made some new friends, there's a nice little cafe and gift shop on site and parking is good highly recommended.
