The Bodleian Libraries are a group of 26 libraries that serve the University of Oxford in England, including the University's principal library, the Bodleian Library. Available tours of the Bodleian Library include the medieval Divinity School and the 15th-century Duke Humfrey's Library. Across the road at the Weston Library there are free exhibitions, an award-winning cafe and shop.
It is a treasure trove of knowledge and history. As one of the oldest libraries in Europe, its stunning architecture and vast collection of books and manuscripts make it a must-visit for anyone interested in literature and academia. The atmosphere is serene and inspiring, offering a perfect space for study and reflection. The library's rich history, combined with its impressive collection, makes it an essential stop for scholars and tourists alike. Overall, it's a remarkable place that beautifully blends the past with the present.
As a book-lover and Harry Potter fan I was very excited to visit this place and our guide made the visit even much more interesting - she was able to tell us some interesting information about recording of Forbidden Library scenes in Harry Potter movies. We booked 15-minutes visit, which was the only one available during the day of our visit. I highly recommend to book a visit in advance.
Bodleian Library Tour is a must must must must thing to do when you are in Oxford. I am not sure about others, but we got lucky to have Jess as our tour guide and she is the best, making history alive! If you have a chance, please do the 90-mins tour, if not 60-mins will do (you will just miss the tunnel - the Gladstone link). You will need to climb up the stairs, and no lift or escalator is provided. Ticket to buy on the day at the counter but do come 2-3 hours early so that you won't miss the sessions. I highly recommend it for its architectural beauty and because this tour has opened my eyes to the true and real role of a library in an academic and a nation's development.
It was a great tour with our guide, Mr Robin. He was knowledgeable and explained the history in a lively way. The library itself was very nice too. It's impressed how the books still keeping good for such a long time.
Sian made our visit to the Bodleian libraries come alive with her enthusiasm and knowledge. We never expected to get so much out of a 60 minute tour! Loved the Harry Potter trivia as well
