10-hectare garden with plants from round the world, glasshouses, outdoor art and a visitor centre.
Wow, I totally underestimated how lovely this place would be! Me and my children (8 & 10) had a lovely few hours here! We arrived at about 1 and had a nice lunch on the outdoor patio surrounded by beautiful colourful flowers. We then wandered around the gardens, into the greenhouses to see the cactus collection, the rainforest set, the inside pond full of fish, a salamander, tarantula, stick insects and others also in this room. The weather was beautiful and we had a nice wander through the forest area through gates and over bridges and up steps. It was a beautiful place with hidden beauties around every corner. It wasn't too busy, we got parked straight away outside for free and the food arrived quickly and was nice. I would definitely visit again. It was a lovely place and out of the main hustle and bustle of the city centre. A perfect stop off to break up my journey from Scotland to East Yorkshire! Only 10 or 15 mins from the A1 :)
Great place to spend a couple of hours. Lovely walks and beautiful displays of flowers. There's activities for children for over the holidays. We enjoyed a piece of cake and a cuppa that were good value. I likes the sculptures spread around the gardens.
A wonderful way to spend a few hours; wandering around the beautiful gardens with amazing sculptures! A true hidden gem! I can't believe I've lived in County Durham all my life and never been here before. Delicious food from the cafe too, highly recommended!
A hidden gem!! Beautiful gardens in the city. A place to breathe. Reflect. Rest & enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Great helpful staff who are ready to help. All ages will enjoy the many varieties of plants, shrubs, trees & birds everywhere. The place is a symphony of honey bees & birdsong. A tropical forest greenhouse. A PS5 ticket will get you entry for all day. There is a small car park which is free for members. A cafe with home made cakes & beverages to entice the visitors. A great credit for the city of Durham.
A lovely botanical garden to visit. I visited here on my way home from Scotland as a break along the journey. It is PS5 to enter and it's isn't the most massive of gardens. However it is nice with multiple defined sections throughout. We took a picnic and ate in a woodland area which was lovely.
Nice enough gardens but lots of wild uncontrolled children spoiling the experience. We went into greenhouses to see ponds and cactus gardens and people were changing children's dirty nappies on picnic tables, child's changing was literally 2 min walk away. Walking area was lovely, as was pond areas, plenty of benches too for regular stops, cafe on site, parking very small & limited. Don't know if I'd be going back.
