Based in the former Manor Street School building since 1993, Braintree Museum conserves and celebrates the history of Braintree and its surrounding areas, focusing on the District's industrial and cultural achievements and its many notable personalities. The Museum's main galleries chart the history of the town from the prehistoric era up to the 21st century, focusing on Braintree's archaeology, industry and craftsmanship. Exhibits include artefacts discovered in the local area, a dedicated area for Crittall Windows, and exhibits that focus on the importance of both the Courtauld and Warner textile firms. Braintree Museum is also proud to celebrate the work of John Ray, widely regarded as the Father of Natural History.
Not having lived in Braintree for the last 40 years or so, our visit was a mix of a trip down memory lane and some surprising discoveries, particularly the pottery aspect. We spent an hour there but could have stayed longer. I should also mention the warm welcome at reception. Excellent.
Good experience. Well worth the time and money spent. Maybe just a two plus hour visit but relaxinly educational.
We visit this museum yearly, during the six weeks holidays when they host their themed events. My family and friends love it. The staff put in alot of hard work to transform the museum to meet the theme. My children never get bored as it is always changing. We always book in to do a workshop whilst we are there. The volunteers who run it are always attentive and friendly, they look after the children so well. It is a real hidden gem and worth a visit!
They had the History of LEGO Trail going on all this week, the whole family enjoyed it, specially the kids, shame it wasn't busy as its a very nice place to visit, and we also got a family pass for 12 months which it's very reasonable. Highly recommended
This little gem was holding a dinosaur event. I took my Granddaughter and my Dino mad great niece along to check it out. Both girls loved it, from the fossil hunting dig, the hook a dinosaur game, the picture hunt and the craft room they were totally engrossed. As for the visiting dinosaur itself wow. Great day out. I would thoroughly recommend it.
Been there as a volunteer for my daughters school trip. It was a lovely experience. All the staff there were kind and friendly. The kids had a go on some of the Victorian artefacts and toys. It was good to see the kids amazed and curious at the same time. I really enjoyed (maybe not the kids, lol) the real experience of the Victorian classroom, the teacher (whom the kids have to call "ma'am") seems quite strict. Experiencing that Victorian classroom scene at some point felt a bit real and overwhelming.
