An amazing place, dedicated to a truly amazing man. Stunning views across Coniston water toward the fells. Lots of nooks both in the gardens and house. Terrace cafe was also good but could do with some additional staffing. We weren't in a hurry of any sort, but there was a considerable wait for orders to ve taken. Menu and food both good when they arrived.
This is a very steep wooded garden. We arrived late in the afternoon and had a brief tour inside the house, which has beautiful views over Lake Coniston. We then took a tour of the garden, and we only managed to work our way through the woods to the top but didn't actually see any formal gardens. I think we ran out of energy to look much further so just had a nice cup of tea in the cafe which was very pleasant .
A lovely visit to a fascinating place. On Coniston Water it was the home of John Ruskin, art critic and environmentalist. The exhibits in the house are illuminating about a man who is not well known today but had socialist thoughts and views that were well before his time. I recommend it.
We were invited by Brantwood staff members Helen and Maria for a complimentary visit to the house and gardens. We met them at the A-Ha exhibition for local hoteliers. It has to be said our visit to Brantwood and the guided tours Helen and Maria provided is a highlight for us of 2024 thus far. The house, the gardens, its history and the wider setting are outstanding. The walk up from the house to Crag Head and subsequent views over Coniston Lake were well worth the effort. Better than that, though, was the incredible energy and informed enthusiasm of Helen and Maria who are each excellent ambassadors for Brantwood. We then took our grandchildren to a Go Wild Easter event at Brantwood, which was guided by Maria and a colleague. This was thoroughly enjoyable and rich in its creativity. We would definitely recommend these children's events to parents and grandparents. Get yourself to Brantwood, and your kids and you will have a great time crafting or weaving or gardening for just PS3. Outstanding value and really lovely as well. Thank you Maria and Helen !
Beautifully arranged museum with lots of info, introduced by incredibly friendly staff. Loved the video, the quiz and the opportunity to sit down and take everything in. What an amazing man John Ruskin was! Thank you.
A wonderful location in a magnificent setting. We visited in January so weren't able to access the gardens due to snow and ice. We were greeted by friendly welcoming staff. In order to get around the site you need to be reasonably mobile with a number of steps and narrow paths. Interesting, stone & crystal displays, a wonderful small library and reading room, in a modest historic building. I enjoyed the visit and thought the terrace tea rooms would be wonderful on a sunny day to sit outside with the views of Coniston Water. As it was January I was grateful for the warmth of a real fire, comfortable seats and a nice cuppa.
