The iconic Old Gaol at the heart of the charming market town of Buckingham. With our stout castle walls built back in 1748, our building oozes character, inside and out. Explore the cells where poachers, drunks and even the odd murderer were banged up. Find out who managed to escape, and how. Enjoy our museum exhibits taking in two millennia of local history, from the time of the dinosaurs to the 1980s. All are welcome. We promise we won't lock you up! Grade II listed building - Arts Council of England Accredited Museum - home to the Buckingham Tourist Information Centre
I found this museum when reading an article about the half angel gold coin there. As a coin collector and lover of history I had to go and wasn't disappointed. Lots to see and very cheap in my opinion. The staff were all very nice. The kids enjoyed it. I'd go again
Lovely little museum. The staff are great. In a beautiful town, so had a walk around after.
In the centre of Buckingham. Nice museum built around the old Gaol with some exhibits inside the cells spanning many years from the Saxon & Roman era through to the 1900s. Very interesting. Tickets PS4 per adult. Parking is at nearby Waitrose car park - just 95 pence for 3 hours. Recommended.
Beautiful building with a lot of history, not the biggest of places but some great displays and lots of information boards. You get to see the layout of the gaol and cells. Lovely friendly staff, a little gift shop on site. Entry fee very reasonable PS4 an adult. For parking I advise using the car park by Waitrose, it is pay and display. Prices are reasonable and the gaol is a 5 minute walk. Definitely worth a visit.
The old Goal Museum is a hidden gem in the heart of town and easily accessible to all. Although it's a small museum but it holds a treasure trove of old and historical artifacts, showcasing the rich heritage of the local area and its residents from bygone eras. What makes this museum even more special is its family-friendly atmosphere. It's an ideal place for a day out with children. They can learn about the history of the area while having fun. Parking is a breeze, thanks to the nearby Meadow Cornwall car park located behind Waitrose offering budget rates. So whether you're a history enthusiast or simply looking for a lovely family outing the Old Goal Museum is well worth a visit.
A fascinating compact building. Showing history through time from earliest settlements through to WWII & even tv & film connected to the area. A wealth of information. Set within the high street you are able to grab a drink & a bite to eat. Also a market held there too right along side the gaol.
