This is a fantastic museum with enthusiastic volunteers who really know their stuff. The buildings are brilliant and feel really authentic, especially because some show signs of fires having been lit in the winter. The site is always adapting and changing, even while we were there, so it is definitely something I will visit again next time I'm in the area.
I've known about this place for quite a while now and finally got the chance to visit. I absolutely loved the experience and the volunteers were so nice and helpful. In all of the buildings there are historical pieces such as flint tools and fireplaces that really add to the atmosphere. There are also tons of informative banners so that you can learn all about the different techniques for building and farming throughout the ages. Overall a great experience and the Roman schoolroom, flint knapping and bronze casting really added to the place. I would definitely recommend it as it's great for kids and adults who are interested, and anyone wanting a good, affordable day out
I'd been looking forward to my visit at Butser ancient farm and it really delivered. Fascinating to walk through chronologically and experience the way people used to live from Mesolithic times through to Anglo Saxon settlements. This is a fantastic model for historical study; experiential and very engaging. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and absolutely nothing about the open air museum feels gimmicky or forced - even the gift shop is small and tasteful, more like a farm shop. It feels like a true, living archaeology experiment, with livestock and living structures. Thoroughly enjoyed being in this ambience and going back in time to be reminded of where we all came from!
Very interesting for adults and kids alike. Kids free entry with Blue Peter badge. Book in advance otherwise you'll pay PS1 more per person at the door.
Brilliant day, interesting and special with the Roman re-enactment, relaxed and perfect place to go with the dogs and children! Staff are lovely and little shop and refreshments available all just super!
Super place for all ages. Good to see how experimental archaeology fits into our overall understanding of the past.
