Wood cabin with walking and cycling trail information, plus daily red kite feeding and a cafe.
Wow! Seeing the Red Kites appear over the hills just before feeding time was so exciting! A magical experience and such a great view from across the water! Would recommend taking binoculars to see the kites swoop for the food off the bank. Parking reasonable especially considering the park itself is free. Lovely cafe with good selection of drinks, hot and cold food all reasonably priced. Great gift shop with some interesting pieces with a good price range. Keep up the great work!
Came here with the kids a few weeks ago for the first time & we loved it! Kids loved the little parks & the iced lollies from the visitor centre! We walked the smallest trail with them where you spot the animals! Gorgeous place & the kids really liked watching the people on their bikes going up and down on the bike runs! Watching the red kites being fed was superb, never seen anything like this before and I enjoyed this the most & got some fabulous pictures of this happening! I couldn't believe that this amazing place could be closing at end of this year apparently due to lack of funding, what will happen to these lovely birds then if they stop all of a sudden being fed at this place after years of relying on this vital food source it's been bothering me ever since I came here to visit! Such a lovely set up that encourages visitors should definitely be made a priority for funding in my opinion, there were loads of people visiting the day we came as it is really popular it would seem! Lots of people all sat around the lake to gather & watch these stunning birds of prey being looked after by the staff & I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this for a lovely afternoon out especially if weather is fine! Parking is only PS1 an hour to pay on leaving the site which I'm sure helps to fund feeding these birds as there is no other charge to get in there! I really do hope somebody will step in as soon as possible to help keep this wonderful place open for as long as possible! Loved it!!!
I loved this place. Went twice during our stay in Wales. It was a short trip from New Quay (where we were based) plus on the way back. We went on a large walk for the first trip and saw the Red Kites on our second (as we didn't catch the feeding on the first time, 2pm/3pm depending on season) The cafe is good. The salad box with chicken I had was good, and my partner was happy with his salad box. Their cake are really good - definitely didn't regret buy Love to return and walk around the lake.
It has been over 20 years since we last visited Bwlch Nant Yr Arian, and it was soon after the centre began feeding the Red Kites. What a memorable experience it was then, especially for our young children, and it was not any different this time. Our children have moved on, living their lives, so my wife and I revisited here again on our way home from our holiday. We paid PS5.00 for the day, as we arrived late morning and summer feeding was at 3pm. In the winter, it's an hour earlier. We decided to take a walk over the hills before lunch. With walking poles and walking boots, we set off up the Red Trail, a "strenuous" route, and it was for the first mile, but the views all around were magnificent. We came across a "giant's" chair, and it was large. We climbed it for the experience of looking across the valley towards Aberystwyth and surrounding the countryside. From here, we climbed higher before dropping down the other side into the woods. The woods appeared as though time had stood still and could have been used in films. Everything was covered in green mosses, and the air felt damp. Continuing along the trail, we walked along a ledge with a steep drop and stunning views looking over the coloured Heather as we walked back to the centre. The time allowed was 1 to 2 hours, so we covered the distance in just over the hour. We arrived back at our car and sat on picnic seats for our lunch. Although the car park was filling up, we saw a handful of people walking our route. Many had arrived with mountain bikes and disappeared off on their own trails. Getting close to 2.30 pm, we saw the first group of kites circling around up high. Along with other families, we walked down to the viewing area, then decided to walk around the lake, finishing at the bird hide. There was a small group of us waiting for the spectacular to begin and what a treat we were in for. By now, there must have been close to 180 birds flying around the lake, waiting for their feed to be thrown over the feeding area. For about 15 minutes, they darted and dived to pick their food before taking off to eat. Once eaten, they returned for more until it was gone. What landed in the lake, the gulls ate, and finally, the ducks appeared to clean up any scraps that were left. Strolling back to the car, the numbers had dwindled to 6. We have no idea where the rest disappeared to but they did. By now it was about 30 minutes after feeding ended. For a great day out, a place to let off steam, either on foot or bikes, and with dogs, I would recommend Bwlch Nant Yr Arian. There is plenty of parking, good facilities, including a gift shop and restaurant, with a choice of eating in or out. We noticed picnic spots all around. Oh, beware the statue of the Red Kite, staring into your eyes as you walk to the hide. It is an amazing feat of engineering skill and worth stopping by.
We visited here whilst on holiday 20 minutes away. Lovely place to visit with some amazing trails to walk with or without your furry friends. Lots to see including the red kite feeding at 3pm. Would highly recommended this stunning place.
Incredible place! Watching the red kites being fed was an unforgettable experience....get here early and you'll see them start to gather for a good couple of hours before. Loved the short trail around the lake with the beautifully painted animals to spot (although there were some we couldn't find...so they must be well hidden).
