Remote setting for medieval monastery ruins, now run by English Heritage, with museum of artefacts.
It's open 'reasonable daylight hours', ie dawn until dusk, as it would be a trip hazard in the dark, but Google maps suggestions don't let you add it. Also, it's free, so no ticket necessary. An absolutely majestic ruin, steeped in history, and let's to read as you go around. An equally stunning backdrop too. Enjoy!
An incredible destination to explore and immerse yourself in the history of the Abbey. Strolling around and attempting to decipher the somewhat confusing notice boards added an enjoyable challenge to the visit. It's astonishing that such a historic landmark is completely free to enter. A must-see for anyone with an interest in our history!
A beautiful abbey in beautiful grounds. A great place to explore with children and dogs. Free entry but there is an opportunity to make a small donation if you wish- no pressure from anyone to do this. A water bowl for dogs is provided. Free car park over the road from the abbey. We had the loveliest afternoon here
Beautiful and well kept site. Free entrance. Litte museum give you the inside what was happening there at the times. Really lovely place and the is good restaurant just opposite the entrance gate.
The second and probably the more breathtaking set of ruins of a monastery in Yorkshire we have visited today. Just as, if not more fascinating as the Rievaulx Abbey ruins. The time will bury everything given a chance.
Beautiful, atmospheric Cistercian Abbey in North Yorkshire. Interesting to look around its ruins as it is very well-maintained. No entrance fee.
On-site services
Wheelchair-accessible car park
Good for kids
