This 12th-century castle in North Yorkshire, England, features stunning medieval architecture, surrounded by picturesque countryside and rolling hills. The castle's stone walls and towers are adorned with battlements, turrets, and grand halls, showcasing its rich history and former life as a royal residence. Visitors can explore the opulent state rooms, chapel, and great hall, and discover the castle's intriguing past through interactive exhibits and costumed interpreters. The surrounding parkland offers scenic walks, a tranquil lake, and a charming woodland, making Caprington Castle a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
Caprington Castle is a 15th Century keep, incorporated in a castellated mansion. 2 miles south west of Kilmarnock, just south of the River Irvine. The Wallace family owned the property from 1385, but it passed by marriage to the Cunninghams in 1400. The original castle keep was included in the refurbished mansion in 1829. The main building is a four storey centre tower with parapets, square corner turrets, a covered entrance, a terrace, and round corner bastions. The building is still a private residence of the Cunningham family. There is no public driving access. Local cyclists, dog walkers and tourists can walk past the property, but a privacy sign stops you walking up the short drive to the main castle entrance, and also the gardens at the front of the castle are marked as private. It is shame really, as it looks like an awesome building, and I would love to get a look inside. Hence, the 3 star review.
Wasn't actually in the castle but walked around the estate grounds. Great locality for an easy walk. Bird song on tap, encountered three thrush in a matter of minutes.
Nice castle but can't see much as it's on private grounds. Walks through the forest are pleasant and easy going.
Fantastic estate fro walking round. Find new paths every time
Good walk around the castle. Its private property with access to walkaround untill.the Irvine river. Nice nature walk or cycle ride for people.
Within 2mins of stepping foot on the land a security company turned up and asked me to leave and to only view from a distance, at which point their vehicle started saying "You are now under surveillance...You are now under surveillance"...What a shame and waste...
