Carew Castle and Tidal Mill's rich history spans over 2,000 years and tells of knights of the realm, kingmakers, Elizabethan intrigue and Civil War devastation. Set in a stunning location overlooking a 23-acre Millpond, the Castle is one of the most architecturally diverse in Wales; from the west a Norman fortress, yet from the north a splendid Elizabethan mansion. The site also incorporates the only restored Tidal Mill in Wales, an 11th century Celtic cross, a Medieval bridge and picnic area all linked by a mile-long circular walk, suitable for buggies and wheelchairs, with magnificent views over the Millpond.
Beautiful castle ruins, look magical both outside and inside. Small souvenir shop and wonderfully nice service, we bought fridge magnets for ourselves and friends, as well as great souvenir pens. Next to the shop a small something for everyone, I enjoyed excellent coffee and chocolate cake. A wonderfully spent afternoon. You can take your dog with you, there is no problem at all.
Very impressive structure and far more there than anticipated. Reasonable entrance fee, which also includes access to the tidal mill. Plenty to look at,and when we went, there were re-enactments all over, which were keeping the kids entertained.
Great castle to explore with the kids, lots of rooms and steps and towers. Very well kept. Occasional events, check the website. Also visit the tidal mill, and the mile or so flat stroll around the mill pond with great castle views. Good food and coffee at the Nest cafe, which you can access without needing to pay for the castle if you want. Parking is free, access from parking to the castle is flat.
Very cool castle, you can climb in and around almost every inch and climb up spiral staircases to look out points and take a nice walk down to the tidal mill Archery available and tours, great for kids and there's free parking
It's a fantastic castle to visit , with beautiful scenery and a tidal mill also. Plenty of partly decorated rooms to give you a hint of what it would have been like is a great touch. We went during the Easter holidays, and there was a fun interactive trail to do. There is plenty of information dotted around, and audio guides are available. There is a nice gift shop at the entrance and a fairly big car park, which is free.
Had a really great day at Carew Castle and Tidal Mill. The castle is an extensive ruin with an optional audio track. Unfortunately this runs off a mobile and I didn't have a signal, so no storytelling. That aside, the castle is a fascinating ruin and well worth visiting on its' own. As a bread maker, the mill was equally fascinating. Four floors with a commentary on each takes you through a journey of flour making. PS8 for both made for a superb day out.
