Castle Hill is situated amongst the beautiful North Devon landscape. Whether you are looking for a venue for a special event or are searching for an enjoyable day out in the countryside, our 50-acre gardens, woodlands and tea room provide an attraction for all seasons, for visitors of all ages.
Had a great first visit. Lots of exploring the grounds, perfect with dogs, lots to see. Lunch was jacket potato which we thoroughly recommend, plenty of it and nicely presented. So much so that we went back for afternoon tea and cakes. A perfect finish to the outing.
There's an old music hall song, 'you could see to 'ackney marshes if it wasn't for the 'ouses in between'. At Castle Hill that's not a problem, you could wave to pals on Dartmoor if you wanted to. The various temples casually scattered about give comfort to the weary climber heading to the eponymous castle. There's so much to see that if II lived there I'd probably keep a horse or two. The gardens/estate would be a joy to grow up in though hide and seek might take a few days to finish one turn. My gardening knowledge extends to pointing at green things and saying "plant" but even I enjoyed the juxtaposition of various colours, the changing moods of each new view...probably easier if you just come and look rather than me rambling on. Come early if you want grub, we came late and had to make do with cakes and hot chocolate, though still jolly nice.
Enjoyable gardens with woodland walks up to a castle folly on the top of the hill
Nice gardens, but expensive at PS8 just to go round the garden, dog friendly.
A fairly large garden with the remains of a castle folly. A nice place to spend a morning or afternoon wandering and admiring. Parking is free, and food and drink are available at the ticket booth with seating nearby, both indoor and out.
Brilliant and awesome walks with gentle sloping pathways that soared over the valley's views from the Castle folly at the top of the hill. Sarah, who worked on the reception desk, gave us a fantastic oversight of the house's Battle of Hastings family heritage, and how hard the family and minimal staff work to continue the venue's talents for all to enjoy. Enjoyed a nice hot chocolate after from Sarah's daughter. Then followed Sarah's directions as to how to visit the archway and temple across the other side of the valley. My teenage son really enjoyed the personal input from the friendly staff. Even met Lord Arun in his overalls, on his mini tractor buggy, working around the estate, even the we didn't know who the friendly gentleman was at the time :-) Wonderful.
