Restored 13th-century castle & fort with spiral stone stairs & informative local history displays.
A castle with a lot of history and a lot of steps! For me, the highlight was taking photos of the surrounding area, great views from up top. Some rooms have been set up to recreate the look and feel of days gone by. Helpful guide gave us a brief explanation of what to see and how to get round as we entered. Handily placed Costa Coffee shop right next door to castle entrance. National Trust (and Scottish NT) members can enter free with their card.
Nice looking castle ruins in a rather pleasant town. Castle is in superb condition, well kept, and a tour is definitely worthwhile. Plenty of decent pubs serving good food. Quite a bit of local history to be investigated. Lovely lighthouse also along the pier/break. Tranquil without being boring.
Excellent example of a fully built castle. Good information at all points and lots to explore. Came here originally 40 years ago, returning now and still a fantastic experience.
Fantastic layout and route around the castle with surprises around every corner. Very reasonable price and staff were brilliant.
It's well preserve. Lots of areas to look around to. The mannequins props adds a great effect with a homorous side to it. Staff are great.
Very well preserved castle. Particularly the ladies who are there to explain the different rooms. Jill Gill and Lee in particular.
On-site services
Wheelchair-accessible entrance
Good for kids
