A former limestone quarry turned nature reserve, featuring walking trails, scenic views, and a variety of wildlife, including birds, butterflies, and insects, with a large lake at its center and a picturesque surrounding landscape.
The quarrying that produced the picturesque reservoir below the milecastle may have begun at the time Hadrian's Wall was built, but it was not until 1902 that the Newcastle Granite & Whinstone Company began to quarry Cawfield seriously. Quarrying continued until 1952 when pressure from groups interested in preserving Hadrian's Wall forced the closure of the site. The deep quarry pit became a reservoir, landscaped to provide a picnic area with access to the Wall. Cawfields boasts one of the best-preserved and most scenic stretches of Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland. Cawfields Quarry is officially recognised as a "dark sky discovery site", perhaps one of the best in the UK! You can also park overnight for PS10, which was Great, until you're being eaten alive by mosquitos, they are 'bad' Really 'bad' black clouds of them, even the toilets were full of them.
Lovely place to stop on the wall, with picnic benches and a LOVELY coffee van that serves local ice cream. You aren't supposed to swim in the quarry but we saw people having a lovely swim in the warm weather.
Another great find and only Two minutes from our stay base of melkridge.. large carpark, clean toilets, picnic benches and grassed area for kids to play... The dogs loved the shallow edges of the water for a splash and run about, so did the grandkids.. walk along the side path to join Hadrians wall upto the top of the hill to check out the wonderful unhindered views along the wall.. climb the steep steps up behind the quarry for more views over the quarry..with plenty of opportunities for photographs, well worth a visit..
Cool quarry where the Romans excavated rocks for their wall. Picnic tables and a short walk to a portion of the wall.
Stunning quarry and a great part of Hadrians wall :). Great for a quick look around, picnic benches if you would like to sit and take in the scenery or do lots of walking. Always need good walking shoes and any walking. Equipment needs, can get very chilly and wet along the wall :)
Quiet, excellent views of the wall, good car park, toilets and a 'tea/coffee van'
Wheelchair-accessible car park
