The Angel of the North is a gigantic metal sculpture located in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, North East England. Designed by Antony Gormley, it stands 20 metres tall and has a wingspan of 54 metres, making it one of the largest sculptures of its kind in the world. The sculpture is made of 200 tonnes of steel and took five years to construct, being completed in 1998. It is anchored to the ground with 12 anchors, each one metre in diameter, to withstand strong winds. The Angel's body is made up of 36 pieces of steel, each one weighing around 5 tonnes, and its wings are designed to flex slightly in the wind. The sculpture is coated with a rust-resistant layer to protect it from the elements. It has become a iconic landmark in the North East of England and a popular tourist attraction, attracting over 250,000 visitors each year.
