The grounds and interior spaces at Chesters Roman fort are open. Measures are still in place to keep everyone safe, and you need to book your visit in advance. Find out more below.
Lovely place to come and see Roman history and that's my favourite period. English Heritage were very accommodating for my mother as she is disabled and it was all easy access for her. I've knocked a star off because the cafe was closed and we were both gasping for a cup of tea, and considering it's the summer holidays I was surprised it was closed by 13.30 there were a lot of people around they would've made a fair bit of money. We didn't see any drinks in the souvenir shop either and I didn't know if it was worth asking. All in all I'd recommend to anyone though. Please note parking for non members is PS3 but free if you are a member.
Brilliant Day! super friendly staff. Spent around 2.5 hours looking inside the museum and loads to see outside I love the fact you can get up and close to all the ruins. Book online as you get the discount. For a sunny Saturday car park wasn't that all to busy. PS3 parking
Another great UNESCO world heritage site along Hadrian's Wall. If you have the Hadrian's wall path passport don't forget your 3rd stamp (or 5th) from the Museum or a box in the car park. Cilurnum is considered to be the best preserved and best example of a Roman cavalry fort along Hadrian's Wall. The fort baths, which have had various modifications and repairs over the centuries, are considered the most impressive on the Wall and one of the best preserved examples in the whole of the Roman empire. The museum was commissioned in 1895 and opened in 1903. It is a grade II listed building and was designed by Richard Norman Shaw. It displays part of John Clayton's collection of Roman finds. Definitely beats some sites in Rome.
Really good place to have a walk. Lots to see, the ground is somewhat flat afew places were uneven but ok. It was really cold the day we went but the cute tea room made up for it. The museum was informative and interesting
Absolutely extraordinary remains of Roman Cavalry fort. English heritage guide Lynn's tour was outstanding
My first glimpse of Hadrian's Wall. There is plenty to discover and a search aimed at children with an accompanying booklet. The added bonus are the QR codes which link to what you would look like as a Roman soldier! Cafe on site, which is around PS5.75 for a sandwich but all proceeds go to maintain the site. Very helpful staff. A small museum but packed with excavated artifacts from the Roman occupation.
