A hidden gem, Clara vale nature reserve is beautiful you can use two hides to spot different wildlife keys from Thornley woods visitor centre, easily accessed through the golf course and over the railway crossing, this means you can combine your visit with a walk along the river, grey seals in the river offer that extra something if you are lucky enough to see one.
Small but lovely nature reserve built on the former colliery site in Clara Vale.
A friend of mine has been one of the leading lights in establishing and maintaining this small reserve over many years, during which time it has been transformed from industrial dereliction to a haven of tranqullity and wildlife interest. Some of the comments posted are unfair in referring to a lack of maintenance - I know for a fact the small team of local volunteers devote a lot of time, energy, and thought towards maximising the ability of this small area to support a diversity of flora and fauna. A couple of days ago my friend guided me round and explained how these efforts pay off, and I observed the result for myself, from wonderful rich meadowland to exquisite ponds - so lovely to see dozens of delicate damselflies !
Lovely space for walks and bird watching
lovely little place. beware its only small, and can probably be walked around in 5/10 mins if you don't stop.
Quiet and secluded nature reserve in what used to be the pit yard. Note that it is very small - only takes about 5 mins to walk around.
