The Clifton Observatory is an iconic Bristol tourist attraction offering superb views of the Clifton Suspension Bridge and the city of Bristol. The Clifton Observatory & featured rooftop terrace are now available for private venue hire and weddings. Rooftop cafe open during the summer (weather permitting).
Visited with a group for an afternoon out. Great piece of history with plenty of pictures and write up of the history. The Camera Obscura gave surprising views across Bristol and along the gorge. The views from the Giant's Cave were thrilling, even down through the grating. Hard hats that are provided but optional are recommended. The coffee shop had excellent coffee and cakes, and all the staff were friendly and helpful. Ideal for a short historic afternoon visit.
This was a pleasant surprise. We purchased the combined ticket and were impressed by both experiences. There's great views of the bridge at the top of the observatory, and the camera obscura was a neat form of innovation to see. The climb down to the Giants cave gave another great view of the bridge from a different angle and the climb back up wasn't too difficult for us.
It was a lovely day so we had an amazing view!! I haven't been here since I was a child despite living in Bristol most of my life Amazing views of the suspension bridge, Leigh woods and surrounding area Lots of information regarding the suspension bridge and the observatory building We also did the giants cave to the observation point in the cliffs. This is accessed from the observatory Not for the faint hearted or anyone with limited mobility!! Very steep at points and low ceilings, but they do provide hard hats Thank you Lisa for the information on the desk!! See you soon x
Beautiful place, very nice service from the receptionist and must-see experience for all people in Bristol, newcomers or localers. The cafe was also very nice - I had a fresh eggs and cress sandwich for lunch. Unexpected history about the tower! It was raining though, so I was given a free pass to see the observatory. There were so many steps but the view was unique and impressive. Highly recommend.
Staff are excellent, the camera at the top is amazing, the museum is clean and informative. The whole place is thoughtful and well appointed. The tunnel and cave is stunning. 10/10.
Clifton Observatory is truly a special place in Bristol. The moment you step foot here, you're greeted with stunning views that are hard to beat. Perched above the Avon Gorge, you get a perfect view of the Clifton Suspension Bridge. Watching the sunset over the bridge is something you won't forget, with the sky turning beautiful shades of orange and pink. The area around the observatory is just as charming. There are lush green spaces and walking paths that are perfect for a leisurely stroll. The natural beauty of the trees and hills combined with the calm river below creates a serene and peaceful atmosphere. What makes Clifton Observatory really stand out, though, is the lively vibe. People come here not just for the views, but to enjoy themselves. On any given day, you'll hear the sounds of people singing, laughing, and having a great time. There are often musicians playing, adding a lovely soundtrack to the scene. It's common to see groups of friends having picnics, families with kids running around, and couples enjoying a quiet moment together. As the day turns to evening, the observatory becomes even more magical. The sunset casts a warm glow over everything, and as darkness falls, the lights of the city begin to twinkle. The bridge lights up, creating a beautiful night-time view. Clifton Observatory is more than just a spot to see the sights; it's a place where people come together to enjoy life. Whether you're there for the incredible views, the friendly atmosphere, or just to relax, it's a place that leaves a lasting impression.
