This 19th-century mill, now a museum, showcases the history of the textile industry in the Stroud valleys. The mill's original machinery is still in operation, and visitors can see demonstrations of spinning and weaving. The museum also features exhibits on the lives of the mill workers and the industry's impact on the local community. The mill's picturesque surroundings, including a riverside walk and a nearby canal, add to its charm.
We've been three times during these 6 week holidays. I'd go again! This is a lovely family day out, especially if you or your child are interested in steam, clocks, wood work, forging, recent local history.... I could go on! There seems to be an army of volunteers who keep this working museum running from the lovely tea room to the working historical mill. My boy had a go at forging a poker, using the wood and metal lathes under close supervision of the volunteers. At PS5 per adult you really can complain on the price either. We love this place.
My family and I had a fantastic visit during the latest steam day at Combe Mill. My 9 year old made a poker in the forge, with the lovely team who kept him interested and safe. My 75 year old dad who loves industrial heritage, woodworking and machinery was in his element chatting to the friendly and knowledgeable staff. Loads of fun, hands on elements for children of all ages. We stayed much longer than intended. Excellent value.
Charming, place everything you could hope for in a heritage Mill and more, to see it at its best go on a steaming day the whirr clank and hiss say it all and complete the magic. The volunteers who run it all are a lovely bunch, friendly, knowledgeable, approachable, and willing to impart information. Add to this a hot dog, wonderful home made cake a cup of tea and a bench by the river and you have it all... Oh nearly forgot the amazing double forge, watching children wield a hammer to make their own poker guided by expert kindly blacksmiths... Loved it, well done everyone involved.
I had an amazing time with the blacksmith experience making a poker, fork and hanger. Everyone was so welcoming, knowledgeable and definitely patient. The rest of the site is a great time with plenty to see, things for kids and a great cafe. Fully reccomend!
This was a fantastic experience - 1:1 tuition for my husband. All the staff, (run by volunteers) are knowledgeable and friendly. They are so passionate about what they do and in keeping this little bit of history alive. Made a poker, toasting fork and hook. Would thoroughly recommend the blacksmith experience.
We visited Combe Mill this last Sunday on their steam day. If you go expecting a large steam event then you will be disappointed but we had a fantastic time. I've a 10 year old son who loves to discover how things work and the volunteers are all more than happy to talk and pass on their knowledge. We watched them start up the beam engine and the metal work enthusiast engaged exceptionally well with my son. We must have spent best part of 90 minutes inside the mill and pattern workshop before heading outside for a lunch of fish and chips under the shade of the trees. If you're looking for something to do in a sunny summer's day then you can go far wrong.
