An isolated tower house in the Cairngorms that was a residence of the high-status Forbes family. After Culloden in 1746, it was converted to become a Redcoat garrison fortress, largely to suppress Jacobite activity. Adaptations and additions included the distinctive star-shaped perimeter wall. The reconstructed barrack rooms offer a window into military life in the late 1700s.
Excellently restored castle with great interpretation boards and the opportunity to glimpse what it might have been like to be stationed there in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is clear that the castle played a pivotal role in the toing and froing of political and military conflicts. Even has an activity area for youngsters and uniforms to dress up in. Well worth a visit but quite a climb uphill from the car park which will present a challenge to folk with mobility issues.
Visited on a Saturday, but didn't go inside, other than to buy a guide book and speak to the very welcoming and knowledgeable member of staff, Sam. The opening days are more sensible now, being Wed - Sun. I didn't go in, as it is not dog friendly.
Beautiful old tower house situated on a small hill overlooking the surroundings. For some bizarre reason it was closed on the day I called ( Murphy's Law...again). Access via a track that winds up the hill so be aware of this if you have difficulty in walking. Car park at entrance gateway at bottom of hill.
A good neat castle. Very remote. The climb up to the front door may be a challenge for the less mobile. Not lots to see info wise. Perhaps needs more info about the life about characters who were stationed there. Walkers use the car park too, so spaces can be of a premium.
Centrally placed for some fantastic road biking. The Castle is a great visit too!
Amazing magical place. Unfortunately, the castle is closed for visitors . But even just watching it from the view point its great.
Wheelchair-accessible entrance
Good for kids
