This 18th-century wharf and beam pump, located in the heart of the South Downs National Park, is a testament to the region's industrial heritage. The wharf, built in 1782, was once a bustling hub for the transportation of goods, while the beam pump, installed in 1865, played a crucial role in the drainage of the surrounding countryside. Today, visitors can explore the wharf's historic buildings, including the old granary and warehouse, and marvel at the beam pump's impressive machinery, which still operates to this day.
Excellent displays and knowledgeable volunteers bring local industrial history to life. Beautiful, peaceful surroundings. Adequate parking. Clean, up to date toilet facilities. Be sure to check website for opening times to avoid disappointment.
Very interesting and volunteers so helpful and friendly. Working beam pump and waterwheel plus other pumping equipment and photos and information various information boards. Only open on Sundays when volunteers are available. Cost PS4 per adult, well worth it.
Absolutely must see, worth hunting down when the open days are and seeing the place. Excellent trail with information boards too. Few parking spaces but those were empty when I arrived.
We went on a free heritage day, although it only costs about PS3 anyway. It is usually only open for a couple of Sundays per month plus summer bank holidays. The volunteers were very informative and keen to explain how things work and it was all very interesting. It's not a huge place, but we went for a stroll along the river to the old Petworth railway station, where they serve cream teas, and so we spent a couple of hours there.
Loved the water wheel and seeing the pump working. Interesting place to visit if you like seeing how things work
Great little attraction with lots of interesting information boards, small kid-friendly demonstrations of various water pumps, and a nice nature trail to walk around, currently with a 'Wind in the Willows' activity sheet. Lovely and knowladgeable volunteers too - a great afternoon out!
