This ancient farm was re-modelled and transformed to use hydraulic engineering by Northumbrian industrialist Lord William Armstrong of Cragside in the 1880s. It has a unique history thanks to this great innovator's vision for engineering and science including a Grade II* Agricultural Site. Enjoy a historical tour of the farm, its buildings, the agricultural hydraulic machinery and engineering skills of 'The Magician of the North'. Visit the silo, weighbridge with its Victorian machinery hydraulic water turbine and jih, the Cragend Grange hydraulic turbine, the courtyard and dairies, and see the farmhouse where there is on-going work stripping back the years to the original stonework. Booking essential. Book through Historic Houses.
What can I say but WOW! We stayed for two nights in the Armstrong wing. It was very spacious, clean and comfortable. Lovely touch with tea and coffee facilities. Dora (our mad labrador) loved her stay. Breakfast was tasty with lovely fresh fruit, homemade granola and cooked breakfast. Lou and Shaun were welcoming and gave great suggestions for walks and places to visit. They even gave a tour of their hydraulic turbine in the farm. Beautiful area of Northumberland to explore just down the road from Rothbury. Will definitely recommend to friends and family and hopefully visit again.
