Jail that closed in 1996 and now hosts public tours, live music and paranormal investigation events.
This was quite the unexpected gem! The tour doesn't take that long, and it's very informative. I must say, the hanging cell was the part that got to me the most. The grounds are well kept, and there's arrows everywhere so you don't get lost. The toilets are clean and there are a cafe and a bar also.
Excellent experience. Well arranged exhibits and video guides along the tour. We combined the experience with a black taxi tour of the troubles. This was so amazing and so moving. Well worth it and excellent value for money.
A must when visiting Belfast! A really cool experience and felt like a step back in time. It was very educational and interesting. The courthouse (that is abandoned) is directly across the road from the Jail and would recommend seeing that too!
It is a really interesting experience. The amount of history and stories that you are able to hear is amazing. It is heartbreaking to listen to some of them so I will not recommend it as a family activity, they even suggest that is a +16 place. I recommend having at least 2 free hours if you want to enjoy the experience 100%.
Crumlin Road Gaol is a grim reminder of the suffering endured by the 25000 men, women and children. Within the Gaol, there are various audio visual displays setup in various prison cells explaining the various details of the inmates and conditions of the Gaol while in operation. The visit is limited to just the ground floor of one wing and the surroundings. Tickets can be collected at the entrance. There is ample car parking.
Fantastic experience, highly recommend people experience this first hand. Tour can easily be 2 to 3 hours access to the car park is off Crumlin road road, going onto cliftonpark ave, taking the available right for the distillery that's rear of the prison.
