Cuilcagh, also known as the Stairway to Heaven, is a majestic mountain located in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It stands at an impressive 665 meters (2,180 ft) tall, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The mountain's unique shape, resembling a giant stairway, is a result of its geological history, with layers of limestone, shale, and sandstone creating a stepped formation. On a clear day, visitors can see as far as the Mourne Mountains in County Down, the Sperrin Mountains in County Tyrone, and even the distant hills of County Sligo. The area is also home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, with heather, gorse, and wild orchids growing on the mountain's slopes, and peregrine falcons, ravens, and red grouse inhabiting the skies and land.
Amazing and beautiful!! If you enjoy your hikes or walks, this a must for your list. 15 km long walk from 1st car park and back, took us almost 4 hours with a break 30 min on the top of mountain enjoying our breakfast before our way back. I recommend to go early you can, we arrived 8.30 am and one car was there so we head great walk we could enjoy just us walking there lol, on the way down stairs was so busy and way back was very busy, when we get on parking around 12.30-1 pm there was 200 cars. So if you want enjoy walk I recommend get there at 7am
Such a great hike, Nice and easy, didn't take too long to complete, 61mins from the car park to the top. Lovely views along the way, We made the climb at 09:00 on a Saturday morning, Great time, as it was empty, Was starting to get busy when we came back down a few hours later.
If you enjoy your hikes or walks, this a must for your list. A lot of ups and downs and more ups. Pay the 7e to park as the walk from the furthest car park is way too far. Anyhow, the begining of the trail is on a path it's about 2.5km, then it becomes the famous boardwalk which we have all seen the photos of. Take a rest before you climb the stairs, we sat on the large boulders and ate sandwiches and drank water. The steps up to the viewpoint can be strenuous depending on your level of fitness so take your time, it is worth the journey to see the views all round. The platform at the viewpoint is small and can be crowded but make sure you take time to enjoy it and take photos. The walk back down feels a lot shorter so you don't suffer too much overall. I had this walk on my list for a long time and I was happy to scratch it off the list in May 2024.
Beautiful views, brilliant walk. Had a good family day out
Ohh, we did it today. Was absolutely good, as we were lucky with weather aswell. I think thats cool place. Was not busy at all, couple people. Just nature, fresh air, birds and sheep around. Lovely.
This walk is beautiful and very easy to hike. It is approx 14km it took myself and my partner 2 hours and 30mins. The time it takes to hike this depends on your speed it can take anywhere from 3 to 5 hours. It also depends on where you park. Parking is not FREE. You have to pay EUR6 or PS5 something which honestly is a ripoff considering the fact that there are zero facilities. There were two car parks both charge the same the one closest I recommended. I've heard though that there is free parking somewhere but I couldn't find it personally. Rant over back to the hike.. I recommend you bring some food and have a picnic because there are places along the way that are nice spots to sit down and enjoy the view. I would not recommend bringing dogs. There was a couple that they to turn back because they couldn't open the gates as they are shut and you have to climb over poor dog couldn't do it. I wouldn't recommend going in the rain it would be a miserable hike and I'm sure it would be slippy. But over all glad it is ticked off my bucket list.
Good for kids
