Dartington Estate used to be amazing but has been completely ruined and has lost all of its soul. Aggressive parking notices everywhere where the parking used to be free, extortionate rates to get into the gardens which also used to be free, The Green Table cafe is nothing like it used to be, rude and unhelpful people running the campsite etc etc. Such a shame!
Lovely walk along the river with all the spring flowers followed by a nice coffee and cake. The buildings are beautiful and there's a good art shop. It might be struggling financially ( as so many places are ) but still worth a visit to enjoy what is there.
The worst hotel I have ever stayed at. We attended for a business trip (not chosen by me) and it was horrifying. We were led and abandoned in old student halls complete with flickering lights. The bed sheets were stained with brown marks. After 20 mins of trying to sleep I found bugs in my bed! I tried calling reception, noone answered. I had a sleepless night and when I raised my concerns with reception staff they couldn't care less!! I even brought the bugs to show them!
The Dartington Estate is beautiful, great location with stunning views. The hotel however is very tired, the room was not particularly clean, the carpet was dirty and the room smelt awful. Breakfast is served in The White Hart bar area. The bar also smells dreadful. The breakfast is not great quality, but there is plenty of it. The tea and coffee was served in paper cups (yes really). The staff at breakfast were far more interested in chatting between themselves rather than in the clients.
We stayed in the river Dart cabin on the Darlington trust.||PS200 for two nights. It's completely secluded and in the most beautiful setting. The cabin literally sits on the river Dart. Very peaceful and tranquil. ||Has a compost toilet and a small cabin with a kitchenette inside. ||No electric which we expected so was absolutely fine.||Drinking water provided as well as tea/coffee/milk. Fully equipped kitchen with fridge & double gas hob.||Can use the showers at the nearby campsite.||Quite difficult to find initially even with the map but we got there eventually with the help of a lovely local man.||Only downside I'd say is the bed, it's in the rafters with ladders that lead up. It's quite high so your feel literally touch the roof where it comes down, my other half is 5' 7 and really struggled to get in so any taller than that and no way you'd be able to get in.||Lots of spiders so not for anyone who has a fear of bugs! ||In all, apart from not sleeping too well in the bed, it was lovely break from normality and super relaxing.||If you want a break from the hustle and bustle of life I'd definitely recommend this place. ||Didn't really explore much of the grounds so can't really comment on that l.
Extremely disappointed, pictures looked amazing, however the reality fell far short. My Husband booked a two day stay, suprise for my 70th birthday, cost PS200. On arrival my husband picked up the keys from the Estate shop? We had to park some distance from our room. I was shocked when we opened the door to the hallway, dirty carpet, scuffed paintwork, when we opened the door to our room it looked like they had put a bed in an office space, mismatched, office chair and desk, we asked to be moved, the next room was even worse, we would have had to keep the blinds permanently closed due to a bench outside the window, people were sitting and looking straight into our room, the lounge area was like a cafe, the whole accommodation was no better than a hostel. I burst into tears, we took the keys back as I refused to stay. I felt so sorry for my Husband as my suprise was a total disaster thanks to Dartington Hall. There were no pictures of the 'cosy' double on their website, now I know why!!
