*Please check the Dartmouth Castle website for the official opening hours. Surrounded by sparkling waters, Dartmouth is one of the most beautifully located fortresses in England. For over 600 years, the castle has guarded the narrow entrance to the Dart Estuary and the busy, vibrant port of Dartmouth. It offers stunning views and provides a great family day out, whatever the weather.
Brilliant. So much to see, read and explore. The castle is on different levels so there's a little walking to be done. Well worth it, fantastic sights from the tower. Plenty of cannons, information boards about guns, wars, soldiers, Dartmouth history, as well as the church and remembrance garden. E. Heritage, so free for members, around PS10 if not. Little shop, cafe directly outside. Parking - there's a small carpark at the castle, but ample street parking on the way up to the castle. It's narrow roads to it, but we had no problem in the motorhome. Lovely woody walk, with stunning sea views.
Take the small ferry boat along the harbour to the castle, the lads that run the small ferry s are very kind and informative. The castle is full of history and the views are spectacular. Dartmouth is one of the best places to go. Good food, clean and the people are lovely.
The castle is nicely located, beautiful scenery around the castle, walking paths with access to the beach. Parking is available for a fee and very few parking spaces are available. You can go to the castle by water, the boat costs 3f and from the castle to the city too. Dog friendly There is a cafe next to the parking lot where you can eat and drink coffee.
Not big castle, but it's worth exploring. We all loved it as it's so unique. We came an hour before closing, and we had it all to ourselves and even got parking next to it.
A few interesting rooms to look around with some exhibits to see. We (1 adult, 1 teen) were there about 90 mins to see / read everything. The site is not very accessible (lots of steps, steep spiral staircases, uneven ground etc). There is a small public carpark (6 spaces), there were spaces available (Saturday afternoon during the summer holidays) because most people either walk from the town (25mins approx) or get the castle ferry (10-15 mins, PS3 pp)
Perched atop a cliff, a stone's throw from the Harbour, this attraction charges an entry fee. We opted not to venture inside. However, the exterior offers a stunning view of the English Channel and Kingswear Castle. It's worth noting that purchasing tickets ahead of time can offer a small saving.
On-site services
Wheelchair-accessible car park
Good for kids
