This medieval cross stands tall in the churchyard of Derwen, a small village in Wales. Carved from a single piece of stone, the cross features intricate designs and patterns, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship. If you are in the area and have an interest in history then it is worth making a little detour to spend 5 minutes having a look around the cross itself and the church yard. Unfortunately the church wasn't open on the day we visited which was a shame as by looking through the windows it looks like a very pleasant little church.
Derwen Churchyard Cross is a large Gothic, pre-Reformation churchyard cross which stands metres from the south porch of the Church of St Mary. Standing on a simple pedestal, the plain shaft is topped by an ornately sculpted head. Despite the extensive weather it is possible to make out the ogee canopies above the images. All four sides are carved and bear depictions of religious scenes.
