A scenic valley carved by the River Derwent, featuring lush woodland, sparkling waterfalls, and an array of wildlife, including red squirrels, badgers, and birds of prey. The reserve's ancient woodland, Muggleswick Woods, boasts some of the UK's oldest and most impressive trees, including veteran oaks and yews.
Lovely sunny morning walk, the gorge was alive with bird song and I was the only one there to enjoy it.
Parking only in laybys. Signage outside woods almost nonexistent, signs and way makers in the woods barely there. There was a lot of litter, dog poo bags, beer cans etc. All said 4 adults and a 6 year old boy did have an enjoyable walk. With smaller or more children it would have been hard to make sure they weren't getting into other people's mess .
Beware of hunters!
